Colic, or abdominal
pain, is a sign of a serious medical problem in horses. Colic is the most common
cause of natural death in horses.
Possible signs of colic include:
 |
loss of interest in food |
 |
lying down for long periods of
time |
 |
rolling around on the ground
(scratching is normal, but they should not roll over more than three or four
times before getting up.) |
 |
not drinking |
 |
any signs of pain or weakness |
*If you think that your horse may be
starting to colic, call a vet ASAP. Try to keep him from lying down or rolling
around and offer him plenty of water.
Colic Prevention Care:
 |
Provide fresh water for your
horse daily (horses like clean fresh water, they become picky when the
weather changes and watch out for freezing water in the winter- horses will
not always break the ice for water) |
 |
feed bran mash (mix bran with warm
water to make a mash) |
 |
add 2tablespoons of salt to your
horses feed to increase drinking |
 |
provide grazing away from
sand |
 |
keep your horse on a consistent
deworming schedule |
 |
be sure that your horse has
healthy teeth |
